From that time in 1959 to date the tunnel has been a vital link from Vancouver and Richmond to get south of the Fraser River to Delta, South Surrey and the USA border. Before the tunnel was in the only way to get to Delta and south was by a small ferry from Richmond BC to Ladner BC. This tunnel over time has improved the transportation link south of the Fraser River
