THV ReadyThe THV Ready is a VT Halmatic Pacific 38 and is now called the MV Roberts Bank Lifeboat, being the current serving vessel with our society entering service in Sep 2008. The "Ready" was designated a rapid intervention vessel and her roles included: buoy handling, providing approximately 100 service aids to navigation around the Dover Strait, search and rescue, hydrographic surveying and emergency response capabilities. She served initially with Trinity House in the UK which is the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar, responsible for a range of general aids to navigation, 'signs of the sea', from lighthouses to radar beacons. They are also a Deep Sea Pilotage Authority providing expert navigators for ships trading in Northern European waters. On the 27th September 2005 in Harwich, UK, the General Lighthouse Authorities (GLAs) of the United Kingdom and Ireland demonstrated port and harbour-approaches using EGNOS and the marine Automatic Identification System (AIS) to raise awareness of the potential of Galileo in the maritime sector. During the demonstration two vessels, the THV Mermaid and the THV Ready, undertook controlled harbour approaches highlighting improved efficiency for both the vessel and the port. This demonstration was supported by presentations giving insight into the Galileo programme, the MarGal project and the potential benefits of Galileo to the maritime sector. The THV Alert replaced THV Ready which went on to complete a brief period of duty with Irish Lights where she served on a trial basis. The Ready was later sold to MacDonald Ferries in the UK where it was to become a rapid crew transfer vessel to various oil platforms, however the company did not get the contract and the vessel was put up for sale. Fortunately for the Roberts Bank Lifeboat Society we were able to purchase this fabulous vessel that has already had a prestigous career. Star shipping of Norway donated deck space on the cargo vessel Star Java and transported the Ready from Europe, through the Panama Canal to Surrey Fraser Docks. We couldn't keep the name in Canada as there are several variations on the name currently on Transport Canada's commercial vessel register. Thousands of hours were then spent by members of the society and local organizations in refitting this vessel. Safety standards had to be transformed from British to Canadian, and equipment upgrades were required to enhance its multi mission status. To view a collection of photographs of THV Ready (which apparently was the third vessel of the same name over a period of years), please check the following link: http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/TrinityHouse.html#anchor62737 The society thanks the community of Delta, and all the individuals, organizations, and companies from across the globe who recognized a need for this vessel in our community and made the endeavour possible. We are grateful! The Roberts Bank Lifeboat Society operates stations at both Roberts Bank Superport (Deltaport) and Ladner Harbour, maintaining our commitment to the safety of those on and around the water in Delta. White Rose of YorkshireFrom Mar 1999 until May 2008 The Roberts Bank Lifeboat had the registered name " the White Rose of Yorkshire". Before being purchased from the Royal National Lifeboat Instituton she served as the Whitby Lifeboat in Whitby, Yorkshire in the north of England for many years.
She has saved many lives over her career in the UK and Canada. This vessel operated in the south Strait of Georgia off Roberts Bank, Point Roberts USA, the Fraser River and the eastern Gulf Islands. A "Waveney" class all-weather, self-righting steel lifeboat powered by two GM 8V-53 engines. It carried a crew of five, and could carry up to sixty survivors. She had fire-fighting, de-watering equipment and powerful towing capabilities of 150 tonnes. Hull #44-012-ON 1033. The White Rose was sold in 2008 to a private individual to allow the society to purchase a faster and more capable rescue vessel. Those who served on this vessel remember her with great fondness. As of 01 Feb 2010 she is still moored by the Westham Island Bridge, Canoe Pass area of Ladner, BC, Canada. The station operated with the White Rose of Yorkshire both as a unit of the Canadian Lifeboat Institute (a non profit society) from Mar 1999 - Dec 2002. It then operated as Unit 8 and later Unit 9 of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary - Pacific (a non profit society) from Dec 2002 until Sep 2008 when CCGA-P budget cutbacks resulted in the station leaving the auxiliary, and Unit 9 being stood down. With the arrival of the THV Ready, the society became an independent lifeboat service, and still maintains its membership with the Canadian Lifeboat Institute. Important Public Notice regarding Roberts Bank Lifeboat StationA local marine rescue society in Delta aligned with a Canadian CG Aux unit based in the United States still runs a misleading article on their website, that article is now 2 years out of date, and causes some public confusion. The public should be aware that the Roberts Bank Lifeboat Station is the property of the Roberts Bank Lifeboat Delta Station Society and as such can ONLY be closed by our society. The Roberts Bank Lifeboat Station is still operational but in an independent capacity, performing an important role in Delta and the surrounding area, and is utilized on an ever increasing basis. We are no longer limited to the types of missions we can conduct and because of this have been able to provide a much wider range of volunteer marine services to the citizens of Delta. We thank you for your continuing support. |
